About Darwin Aviation Museum

Darwin Aviation Museum – Discover the Legacy of Flight

The Darwin Aviation Museum, an accredited Northern Territory tourism attraction, offers a fascinating journey through Australia’s rich aviation history. Welcoming over 30,000 visitors annually, this museum is a must-see for history buffs, aviation enthusiasts, and curious travellers alike.

A Rich History of Preservation

Founded by the Aviation Historical Society of the Northern Territory in 1976, the museum began as a project to preserve aviation artefacts and salvage World War II aircraft damaged during Cyclone Tracy. Over time, its mission expanded to include the exploration and preservation of crash sites and relics tied to Darwin’s defence during World War II.

Iconic Aircraft Collection

Home to one of Australia’s largest aviation collections, the museum boasts an impressive lineup, including the Boeing B-52G Strato-fortress bomber, acquired through successful negotiations with the US Air Force and the Northern Territory Government. This iconic aircraft, displayed in a purpose-built hangar, is a highlight for visitors.

The museum also showcases an extensive array of military and civilian aircraft, aviation artefacts, and war relics, offering an in-depth look at Australia’s aviation achievements and Darwin’s strategic role in World War II.

Visitor Experience

Located just 7 km from Darwin’s CBD on the Stuart Highway in Winnellie, the museum features a well-curated gift shop and reinvests all proceeds into restoration projects and maintaining its growing collection.

Discover the Darwin Aviation Museum, where the past takes flight. Explore the stories, marvel at the engineering feats, and witness history come to life in this unique outback aviation hub.
