About Hebel Hotel

Experience a True Outback Welcome at the Hebel Hotel

Steeped in history and full of charm, the Hebel Hotel is more than just a pub—it’s a living piece of outback heritage and the heart of the Hebel community. Located on the Castlereagh Highway, just north of the NSW/Queensland border, this iconic stopover offers great meals, cold beers, cozy accommodation, and plenty of character.

A Historic Landmark

Since its opening in 1894 as a Cobb & Co changing station, the Hebel Hotel has been a gathering place for drovers, travelers, and locals alike. Its weatherboard-clad walls, corrugated iron roof, and original horse hitching rails are a testament to its rich history. Inside, the pub walls are adorned with memorabilia, from wool bale bags to station brands, offering a glimpse into the past.

Adding to its unique charm, Lightening Ridge artist John Murray has left his mark with vibrant murals that make the Hebel Hotel a must-see destination.

More Than Just a Pub

The Hebel Hotel is the perfect spot to relax with a hearty meal, cold drink, and a yarn with the friendly locals. Whether you’re passing through or planning an event, the hotel’s outdoor entertaining area is ideal for celebrations, catering to everything from birthdays to community events.

Accommodation Options

Stay a little longer and enjoy the hotel’s range of accommodation, including:

• Pub cabins and guest rooms

• Bunkhouse rooms

• Caravan sites with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities

Saved by the Community

Closed briefly in 2020, the Hebel Hotel was saved by local grazier Frank Deshon, who understood the pub’s importance as a community hub. “It’s where stories are shared, where we celebrate and support each other,” says Frank. Thanks to his efforts, the Hebel Hotel remains a place of connection and camaraderie.

Stop by and Say G’day

Whether it’s for lunch, dinner, or a friendly drink, the Hebel Hotel and General Store are open 7 days a week. Be sure to visit this historic outback gem—full of charm, character, and a warm welcome for all who stop by.
