About Terrestrial Information Centre
Terrestrial Information Centre – A Gateway to the Wonders of Etheridge Shire
Located in Georgetown, Queensland, the Terrestrial Information Centre is a must-visit destination for travellers exploring the Etheridge Shire. Originally opened in May 2003, this unique facility houses the Ted Elliott Mineral Collection, one of the world’s most significant private mineral collections, along with geological, historical, and cultural displays that showcase the richness of the region.
A Geological and Cultural Landmark
Funded by Etheridge Shire Council with support from the Queensland State Government and the Kidston Gold Mine, the centre is built beneath a repurposed shed structure that once stood at the historic Kidston Gold Mine, 150km south of Georgetown.
Visitors can explore:
• The Ted Elliott Mineral Collection, featuring an extraordinary array of minerals, gemstones, and geological specimens from the Etheridge region and beyond.
• The courtyard’s glacial pebbles, sourced from O’Brien’s Creek, known for its semi-precious topaz.
• The stunning foyer display, a two-metre-long sign created by lead light artist Terry Smith, composed of 287 agate cabochons from the Agate Creek gemfields.
• Two impressive mineral specimens at the entrance – a Crinoid in Limestone and Feldspar Crystals in Granite.
The Peace Monument Garden
Behind the centre, among native trees, sits the Peace Monument Garden, honouring global peace champions such as Dr Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Eddie Mabo, Helen Caldicott, Julian Burnside, and Dr Daisaku Ikeda.
